When the weather is nice, Jeep Wrangler drivers in Middletown love to feel the wind rush by as they ride around with the doors and top off. Maybe you’ve wanted to do this, too, but feel intimidated by the thought of taking apart a Jeep. Well, you don’t have to schedule service to do this (though the team at Old Saybrook Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM will be happy to help). With these simple instructions on how to take the doors off a Jeep, you should be feeling the wind in your hair in no time.

How to Take the Doors Off a Jeep

  1. Roll down the windows, so as not to break a window if you accidentally drop a door.
  2. Disconnect the wiring before unscrewing the first door.
  3. Remove the cap nuts from the hinges with either a Torx screwdriver with a T50 bit or a ratchet with a 30mm socket. Pro Tip: Loosen each cap nut a little at a time instead of taking them off one-by-one. Otherwise, you might strip the last nut when all the weight starts to rest on it.
  4. Unlatch the door strap with caution, as the door strap keeps the door from swinging too far and hitting the body of the Jeep. Keep your hand on the door while removing the strap.
  5. Remove the door by reaching through the open window and grabbing the inside door handle. Take your other hand and grasp the outside door handle. Now lift straight up and remove your door.
  6. Repeat this process for all doors on your Jeep.

How to Take the Top Off a Jeep

  1. Unlatch the front panel latches, popping out the sun visors to reach some of them.
  2. Remove the front panels one at a time. Lift up on the panel that’s on the driver side, and then remove it. Do the same to the panel on the passenger side
  3. Remove the bolts on the rear section (two Torx bolts on each of the corners and three on each of the sides). You will need a T40 bit to remove them.
  4. Disconnect the wiring harness, located near the rear hatch.
  5. Remove the hardtop with either another person present to help or using a specially made harness.

Now that you know how to take a top off a Jeep, you’re ready to roll through New London and enjoy the weather (when it’s nice, of course!).
