A lifted truck can be a lot of fun when you’re off-roading, and it can make trucks capable of handing harsh New England winter storms. Take a look at our guide to how to lift a truck, then contact the parts department at Old Saybrook Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM to get pricing information for truck lift kits.

Should I Lift My Truck at Home?

Lifting a truck is a difficult, time-consuming process that requires many tools and quite a lot of patience. A trained and certified professional will take 7-15 hours to install a lift kit in a professional shop. Even a skilled DIYer should plan to spend twice as much time once they know how to lift a truck from home. It’s not a job we recommend doing as a DIY project, no matter how tempting it is to save the labor costs.

If you do decide to perform an at-home installation, you should follow your lift kit’s instruction manual to a tee. Our guide is meant for those who would like a general overview of the process before they purchase a kit or try to start a lengthy and difficult installation on their own.

Tools Required to Install a Lift Kit

If you’re going to install a lift kit at home in New London, you need to be very confident in your DIY skills. This isn’t a job for a beginner. It also requires some next-level tools. Here’s what you’ll need if you learn how to lift a truck and opt to do it at home:

  • Vehicle jacks and jack stands
  • Socket wrench
  • Torque wrench
  • Lug wrench
  • Screwdriver

It’s a good idea to keep a pry bar and a hammer handy in case you run into problems removing old parts from your truck. WD-40 or similar penetrating oil is helpful, too. Bring along some of your extra nuts and bolts, too. Remember, this is the bare minimum you’ll need for installing a lift kit. You can purchase most of these tools through our parts department. Having access to a full shop is preferable, though.

How Do I Lift My Truck at Home?

These steps are intended to give you an idea of what installing a lift kit entails when you do it from your Madison home. Once again, if you choose to install a lift kit yourself, follow the exact directions for the kit you purchase. The following are not instructions, but used to give you an idea of what to expect so you can decide if learning how to lift a truck at home is a safe choice you’re comfortable making.

  1. Remove the negative battery cable.
  2. Loosen tire lug nuts so the tires are easier to remove when your truck is off the ground.
  3. Use your jack and jack stands to raise the vehicle, making sure the truck’s center of gravity is exactly where it should be. The process will take a while.
  4. Remove the wheels and tires and set them aside.
  5. Remove the old U-bolts, current shocks, and springs.
  6. Attach the new bolts and, while assembling any parts according to the instructions that came with your kit, attach the new shocks and suspension.
  7. Use your torque wrench to make sure that all pieces and bolts are tightened according to the proper specifications.
  8. Attach your tires.
  9. Lower your vehicle carefully, going little by little, and keeping it as level as possible as it inches towards the ground.

You might also need to install a longer driveshaft, a new transfer case, or other additional components.

Before you hit the trails out near New London, schedule an inspection at our service center to ensure that everything is good to go.
