How to Be Fuel-Efficient When Driving

Illuminated Fuel Gauge

When you’re driving in Middletown, you’re probably looking for how to be fuel-efficient while driving. How can you save fuel while driving on hills, anyway? While many new cars have exceptional fuel economy, and gas mileage technology keeps improving, fuel-efficient driving habits will still make your life easier on New London roads. You can learn how to maximize your MPG when you learn how to be fuel-efficient. Old Saybrook Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM is here to show you how.

How to be Fuel-Efficient with Five New Habits

No matter where you’re driving in the Madison area, it’s easy to adopt fuel-efficient driving habits. How can you save fuel while driving on hills? It’s possible! Check it out:

  1. Accelerate Slowly: The term “having a lead foot” might be an exaggeration, but it’s rooted in reality. When you lightly press the gas pedal, you use less gas, especially when you’re accelerating. Aim to take five seconds to bring your vehicle up to 10 MPH from a stop.
  2. Plan Ahead for Traffic: Sitting in stop-and-go traffic eats a lot of gas. If you’re able to avoid traffic by leaving earlier or later, or by taking less-traveled roads, you’ll save gas.
  3. Avoid High Speeds: Back to the lead foot—higher speeds mean more fuel consumption. When you’re on the highway you’re going to get the best fuel economy if you’re driving between 55-65 MPH. Just make sure you’re staying within the speed limit.
  4. Coast to a Stop: Don’t have a lead foot on the brake, either. If there’s no one ahead of you and you need to come to a stop, take your foot off the gas and let your car coast to a stop. This is also how you can save fuel while driving on hills: Reduce your speed as you go uphill, then coast down the hill.
  5. Use Air Conditioning Sparingly: Your air conditioner can increase your fuel consumption by up to 20 percent. Turning off the a/c—or even running it lower than full blast—is a fuel-efficient driving habit you should consider adopting.
